Equally important is ensuring that students feel heard and seen throughout their educational journey.
Students perceive an institution’s commitment to them through the resources provided and the manner in which they are delivered. Stressors affect all students during their academic journey. Helping them cope with these challenges, guiding them through difficulties, and showing empathy can empower students to see possibilities rather than obstacles. Having someone to talk to during unexpected situations enables them to better manage both school and stress. The support offered must be genuine, as students can easily sense when they are being dismissed or inadequately supported in their time of need.
Retention has been, and always will be, everyone's responsibility. However, depending on the institution you are in, that may not always be the case. Retention is often more front-loaded than back-loaded. The institution doesn't only need to have the right people in the right place at the right time—it also needs to ensure that its systems are being upgraded to meet current demands. If the systems are outdated, students will notice. As stated, students are more astute shoppers and have higher expectations.

Creating a customer-driven organization, to me, means placing the customer at the center of every decision, process, and strategy.
I thought it was interesting to learn that while there are many tools to help with student success, if they aren't used properly, they will not be impactful and can have the opposite effect. Also, the importance of consistent and valuable experiences within the classroom is an integral part of student retention.
Retention is the by product of doing the right thing in the right way for students. It's an important initiative for everyone on campus because many students who are not retained, could have been retained with the correct efforts and outreach.

In other words, for every one person who doesn't buy into your vision and positive culture, it takes eleven people to make up for the one person who is not on board with you. .
